On Wednesday 21st March, our Eco Council were invited to join in with an air quality survey being carried out, for South Bucks District Council, along Iver High Street. The monitoring team from Ricardo Energy and Environment explained how the equipment worked and answered questions from our pupils. Once the data has been analysed, Cerys Williams (Senior Environmental Protection Officer) at South Bucks District Council will return to IVJS to explain the results to us. Our pupils were commended by Ricardo E&E on the depth of their questioning – well done everyone!
We are writing to offer you the opportunity to attend an Easter Maths Eggstravaganza with your child/children on Tuesday 27th March 2018 at 6pm. A fun filled evening which includes:
What a blast today was! We celebrated World Book Day today here at The Iver Village Junior School and you should have seen our assembly! We have spent the day in our own fairy tale as we have spent time with many cats in hats, Alice dropped by on her way back to Wonderland and Willy Wonka entertained everyone with his stories of golden tickets, all under the watchful eye of Superman, ahem, I mean Clark Kent.
Each child received a free book to help really get them excited about reading, what did your child bring home? We are very excited to tell you that we will be celebrating ‘Maths Day’ on Wednesday 28th March. To celebrate this day, the children will be immersed in a range of Maths learning including playing maths games and investigations that develop their reasoning skills. As part of Iver Village’s vision to develop a positive ethos surrounding maths, we would like to invite any parents to talk to the children about how maths is used in their profession. If you are interested in being involved in this part of the day, please contact Miss Zughaid directly or contact the school reception where we will arrange a time for Miss Zughaid to contact you. This Week In School… Year 3 – have been carrying out a survey and drawing graphs in Maths, looking at everyone’s favourite sports. In English, Year 3 have started their own narratives based on the myth of Thor and his Hammer. For science, they have been looking at the relationship between height and shoe size and looked at how buoyant different materials are! Year 4 – have been dividing one digit by ten and looking at tenths on a place value grid. In English, Year 4 have been retelling part of a story about Noah Barleywater stealing apples! As part of Science week, they looked at the Vitruvian Man to see if Leonardo Da Vinci’s theories were correct! Year 5 – have concluded with their retelling of a narrative about the 'Cyclops'. In Maths, Year 5 have been looking at converting fractions, decimals and percentages. They have also had a very exciting Science Week, one of the experiments was to investigate UV light emitted from the sun – they did this by creating bracelets with UV beads! Year 6 – have been working on decimals on a number line and dividing one and two digit numbers by 10 in Maths. In English, they have been writing a narrative based on the book Noah Barleywater Runs Away, they have focussed on punctuating direct speech and using expanded noun phrases. We are getting school dogs! As you know we have been having Dudley the Dog in school on Wednesday afternoons to hear readers since October 2017. This has been a huge success and has greatly increased the excitement about reading! With this in mind we are going to introduce two school therapy dogs to IVJS. Ralph and Hugo are two small Maltese/Lhasa Apso dogs (hypoallergenic breeds so do not cause allergic reactions) which are 4 and 5 years old respectively. They have very calm and relaxed temperaments which we believe are well suited to life at our school. As we have discovered from talking to other schools there are many potential benefits to having a school dog and we believe it will have a positive impact on various aspects of school life. Numerous research studies have shown the benefits of therapy dogs in schools. Therapy dogs have been working in schools across the UK for many years and are becoming increasingly more common as a result of the broad-ranging benefits achieved. You can read the full letter with permission slip (sent as a paper copy with children) to interact with Hugo and Ralph by clicking on the letter and you can find both the school's risk assessment and Hugo and Ralph's fact file which includes guidelines on behaviour around the dogs that children and staff must follow. We had a blast on Thursday afternoon wandering in our wellies! We could really see the creativity of the children in the school because we had some fantastic designs!
Thank you to everyone who took part, everyone who attended the walk and everyone who has donated. We are still accepting donations, please could all donations be handed in by next Wednesday for our Enterprise club to tally and add to our fundraising pot! |
