Curriculum

Curriculum Intent
At Iver Village Junior School, our curriculum puts the development of each child at the centre of our heart of everything we do. We aim to provide a curriculum which is not only broad and balanced but equips children for the next phase of their education and for life in modern Britain. We want all our pupils to be able to be effective citizens, to care about the community in which they live and to understand their place in our world.

Our ambitious curriculum has been designed to take account of the statutory requirements the Primary National Curriculum whilst being carefully crafted to support the needs of our school community. We aim to ensure that our pupils are immersed in a coherently sequenced curriculum that explicitly teaches the concepts, knowledge and skills required to achieve alongside our school values of perseverance, commitment and positivity, to produce well-rounded learners who are equipped with the skills needed to succeed.

The key principles behind the design of our curriculum are for our pupils to:
  • be confident, resilient and committed to learning
  •  be kind; showing empathy and compassion whilst valuing diversity
  • achieve academically across the entire curriculum, knowing more and being able to do more.
  • be culturally knowledgeable about our country and our world
  • have aspirations for the future and know that these can be reached through hard work and determination
  • be equipped with the language and vocabulary skills needed to express their understanding and be successful in life beyond school
  • be well prepared for the challenges of the secondary school curriculum and beyond.
Ultimately, we want all of our pupils, to believe in themselves and know that through perseverance, commitment and positivity, they can ensure that they can succeed and make a positive contribution to the world they live in.

Our whole school curriculum strives to provide pupils with opportunity to practise the essential skills needed in the modern world. We believe it is imperative that we support pupils in developing core skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, so that they can demonstrate their learning passionately and articulately, and aim to embed these within every curriculum area, alongside subject specific knowledge and skills.

We strive to ensure that pupils are active participants in all lessons and are provided with appropriate support and challenge to retain knowledge, develop skills and feel successful throughout every lesson. We are committed to supporting pupils in developing their working in partnership with parents as we believe that when home and school work closely together we get the best outcomes for our pupils.

As a school, we recognise that every aspect of school life has an impact on our pupils’ future and therefore the holistic development of our pupils lies at the heart of the curriculum we deliver. Our pupils have access to a wide range of opportunities which promote safety, emotional well-being and personal development. We aim to empower our pupils to put their knowledge and skills to good use, making a difference to the world around them. Pupils are supported to be actively involved in whole school decision making through the School Council and many positions of responsibility such as Safeguarding Superheroes, Agents for Change and Cultural Cadets.

At Iver Village Junior School, we strive to ensure that learning ‘sticks’ for all our pupils and they are able to recall knowledge and skills they have learnt effectively in order to move on to their next stage of learning. As a result, we have designed a spiral curriculum which continuously revisits core skills and concepts, building coherently between topics and year groups to ensure pupils develop a secure foundational understanding in all subject areas.

Teachers use a systematic approach to teaching in all lessons, which includes retrieval practice, modelling, opportunities for guided practice and when ready, opportunities for independent practice. Teachers carefully craft lessons, reflecting on the needs of the pupils, to build skills and knowledge systematically, allowing for a sense of success throughout for all pupils.
