Geography Curriculum Intent Statement for Iver Village Junior School

At Iver Village Junior School, our Geography curriculum is designed to ignite a sense of curiosity and exploration in our pupils, empowering them to become fearless explorers of the world around them.
Geography is a fundamental part of our curriculum, as it enables students to develop a deep understanding of the world, its environments, and the processes that shape them. Through Geography, pupils will acquire essential skills and knowledge that will not only broaden their horizons but also cultivate a holistic appreciation of the interconnectedness of our global community.
Our Geography curriculum is aligned with the core values of Believe, Achieve, Succeed together, as we believe that by fostering a love for exploration and understanding, pupils can achieve success both academically and personally, ultimately leading to a successful future.
Building upon the foundations laid in key stage 1, our Geography curriculum in key stage 2 aims to deepen students' knowledge and understanding of different countries, human and physical features, and their own local environment. This progression sets the stage for future learning and encourages a lifelong passion for discovery.
Geography plays a vital role in enhancing the broader curriculum by encouraging interdisciplinary connections. Pupils will explore the links between Geography and other subjects, fostering a well-rounded education that promotes critical thinking and creativity.
Through Geography, pupils will develop critical skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and spatial awareness. These skills are essential for navigating the complexities of the modern world and preparing students for future challenges.
Our Geography curriculum is informed by educational research and data, ensuring that our teaching approaches are grounded in evidence-based practices that have been proven to enhance pupils’ learning and engagement.
Through our Geography curriculum, pupils will gain valuable skills, knowledge, and perspectives that will not only benefit them academically but also prepare them for success in an increasingly interconnected and diverse world. Geography will equip our pupils with the tools they need to navigate and contribute to a global society with confidence and understanding.
At the end of each topic, pupils will complete a subject knowledge snapshot quiz based on the year group's assessment criteria. This will help teachers to identify areas of learning that are secure and areas of development for future teaching.
Believe, Achieve, Succeed together through Geography at Iver Village Junior School - where every child is inspired to explore, discover, and thrive.
