On Wednesday 20th March, IVJS competed in their annual Swimming Gala, held at Wycombe Abbey School! The swimming gala is the most popular tournament of the year with over 10 other schools involved! The team from Year 5 and 6 competed incredibly well, with Ronnie and Ria both coming second in their respected races! Overall, IVJS came sixth, which is the same result as last year! Well done to all Swimmers, what a fun afternoon out! Thanks to all parents who were able to come and cheer IVJS on!
IVJS won both basketball tournaments for Years 3/4 and for Year 5/6 back in 2018. This meant that both teams where able to represent school at the County Finals. This tremendous achievement meant that on Tuesday 12th March, the lower school basketball team travelled to Sir Thomas Fremantle school in Milton Keynes and the upper school went to the same place on Tuesday 19th March. IVJS played against the best basketballers in the county and held their own in both tournaments but in the end where not quite good enough to come home with a medal! Well done to all basketballers both Lower and Upper school. The first players to go to a county final in IVJS history! You have made us all very proud!
21 children from Year 5 attended Echoes 8 – Dare to Dream at the Royal Albert Hall which was a celebration of singing and musicianship featuring 1800 primary children from Buckinghamshire coming together with BMT musicians and partners.
Dare to Dream is a newly commissioned semi-staged opera composed by Hannah Conway, libretto written by Lucinda Jarrett and Chris Rawlence and directed by Karen Gillingham. This project is a partnership between Buckinghamshire Music Trust, Garsington Opera and Rosetta Life. Echoes 8 was an exhilarating experience and a celebration of the joy of singing. Thank you to Miss Ghedia and Miss Naulls for all their hard work in making this happen! Donaldson class (Year 4) will be participating in swimming lessons next term. Swimming lessons are held at The Chalfont Leisure Centre on Fridays and transport is provided to and from the pool. Swimming will start on Friday 3rd May 2019. Mr Hawkes and Miss O’Connell will be supporting the children whilst they are swimming. All dates are below:
This Week In School… Year 3 – have read a new tale called The Singing Ringing Tree which they are using to inspire their writing. In Maths, they have been looking at statistics, conducting their own surveys and presenting the data in different forms. Year 4 – have written a descriptive letter about Noah’s adventures from their class book, Noah Barleywater Runs Away. Year 4 have been tackling division in Maths and have learned all about the mummification process and how electrical plugs work! Year 5 – have been on a trip into deep space as they finished their solar system projects (they look great and were a perfect follow up to the trip to the Science Museum)! They've also been learning about decimals in Maths and learning how to write persuasive emails in English (they are even trying to convince someone to go to space)! Half of Year 5's have also been incredibly busy practising for Echoes! Year 6 – have been finalising writing a newspaper report in English. The children have also been working on writing a non-chronological report in Science about how we see things. They have been learning about the features of rivers as part of our Humanities topic and had the opportunity to build on this during our fantastic trip to Denham Country Park. On Monday, please have your child in school for 8.45am as normal. The coach will leave by 9am. Please remember to have your child in school wearing black bottoms (no tight leggings or tracksuit bottoms please) and a tshirt/top that is quick to change out of (with a vest underneath). They will also need 2 large packed lunches and drinks as there will be no food available at the event. During the day, the children may leave the venue for a short time as we have been invited to join the other schools for a picnic in the adjoining park, weather permitting. Please find the meeting arrangements below, we have been allocated Green Meeting Zone, this is on the south west steps of the hall, please see the map below. We are hoping to meet parents here from 9.15pm. We have a new school mobile number specifically for trips like these, if you have any issues, please call or text 07880835088. Today is Red Nose Day and here at IVJS, we celebrated by wearing red to show our support for Comic Relief.
We have had a brilliant week of fundraising, selling out of Red Noses on Wednesday, raising a total of £300 and extra money today for non-uniform day donations. We would also like to thank you everyone who donated and everyone who bought Red Noses, every penny counts! Year 6 enjoyed a great - if rather wet - day out at Denham Country Park on Thursday. Although the weather wasn't particularly kind at the start of the day, it did improve as the day went on and they even saw a glimpse of the sun! During the day the children took part in three activities: River Dipping, River Dynamics and a Wild Walk. During River Dipping, they were able to find a variety of river life and look at them closely with magnifying glasses in order to identify them; during River Dynamics the children took part in scientific investigations to measure the width of the river, the depth of the river and the rate of flow of the river; and on the Wild Walk, they explored the park and visited the canal lock (this even included a game of Pooh Sticks!) A great day was had by all and we were very impressed with the children's behaviour and with how much they have learned so far from the Year 6 river topic! |
