The Orchard

The Communication and Interaction SEN Unit at IVJS

Welcome to the Orchard!

The Orchard is a  Communication and Interaction Unit at The Iver Village Junior School for pupils with communication and interaction needs.

The provision offers 8  places for pupils who benefit from a more personalised approach to learning within a small, structured and supportive environment.

At The Orchard, we provide a nurturing, small-group setting where pupils are supported to access learning in ways that are meaningful and appropriate for them. Our approach is centred on understanding the individual needs of each child and supporting them through:
  • Strong, positive relationships
  • Sensory regulation
  • Communication development
  • Building confidence and independence

Our aim is to support pupils to develop the skills they need to engage successfully with learning and the wider school community.

Our Vision for The Orchard

Our vision is for The Orchard to be a safe, nurturing and supportive space where pupils can thrive.
We aim to create an environment where every child feels valued, understood and develops a strong sense of belonging. Through personalised support and strong relationships, we help pupils build confidence, develop their communication skills and regulate their emotions.
By supporting pupils in this way, we prepare them for their next steps in learning and life, enabling them to participate as fully as possible in school and the wider community.

Our Team

Pupils in The Orchard are supported by a skilled and dedicated team including:
  • Qualified teachers
  • Experienced Learning Support Assistants
  • Specialist professionals, where appropriate, in line with pupils’ individual Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
The team works closely with families, school staff and external professionals to ensure that support is personalised, consistent and effective for each pupil.

Curriculum

The Orchard curriculum is carefully designed to support pupils’ communication, emotional regulation, independence and engagement with learning, while also providing opportunities to access the wider school curriculum where appropriate.
Learning is adapted to meet pupils’ individual needs and developmental stages, ensuring that every child can experience success and meaningful progress.

Admissions Arrangements

Admissions to The Orchard are managed through the SEND Team at Buckinghamshire County Council.
When a placement consultation is received, staff from The Orchard may visit the child’s current setting. This may include:
  • Observing the child in their learning environment
  • Meeting with school staff
  • In some cases, meeting with parents or carers
This process helps the team determine whether The Orchard is the most appropriate provision to meet the child’s needs.
Please note that having a mainstream place at The Iver Village Junior School does not automatically entitle a child to a place in The Orchard.
