This Week In School…
Year 3 – have had a very busy week! They have worked extremely hard on with their English and Maths assessments, demonstrating all they have learnt over the last term. In English they have been writing, using the 'message in a bottle' picture as a prompt. In Maths, they have continued their learning about multiplication and division, focusing on the connection between the two operations. In Science, they have concluded their topic about animals by looking at how muscles work within the human body. They had a Zoom call with Farmer Nicola on Tuesday. She shared how she has to care for the sheep and deer each day, in any weather, including on Christmas Day! She gave them a demonstration about how her tractor is used to distribute the food across the glen to feed the sheep. Year 4 – have worked really hard on their end of term assessments and should be proud of themselves. In English, they have written their next instalment of their travel brochure about Iceland by writing about what you can see on your trip there. They have tried to include fronted adverbials in their writing. In Maths, they have been recapping their written methods of addition and subtraction. In DT, they have planned a seasonal vegetable soup that they will make before the end of term. In computing they discussed and compared the amount of time they spend online and on devices. They have also enjoyed designing some special houses as part of our up and coming collaboration display with Hilton, Locke and King. Keep an eye on the estate agents’ windows for some special houses coming soon! Year 5 – have begun writing a narrative based on a book called the 'Christmasaurus'. The children have worked hard in describing the clumsy, wishful Christmasaurus and the magical North Pole - they have definitely impressed the Year 5 teachers with their ambitious vocabulary. In Maths, the children have been working on subtracting fractions using their knowledge of mixed numbers and improper fractions. They have also begun to explore types of fastenings and stiches in DT and are going to use this knowledge to produce a wonderful creation next week. It has been a fun and industrious week in Year 5! Year 6 – have started a new piece of writing in English. They have watched a video called 'Glued' and will be re-writing the story. So far, the children have started to write setting and character descriptions and we have been very impressed by the figurative language and vocabulary they have been using to write some effective descriptions. In Maths, the children have finished their topic on fractions by focussing on multiplying and dividing fractions. They have continued learning about Brazil in Humanities, this week learning about the different climates in the country and about the extreme weather and natural disasters faced by Brazil. Year 3 – have taken to the stage with the rest of the school to perform their winter poems on Monday evening. Both Cardiff and Cairo class did brilliantly! In Maths, Year 3 have been building their multiplication and division skills. They have been focusing on multiplying and dividing by 3 and working hard to transfer their knowledge to solve word problems. In English, the children have become news reporters and have been busy writing their own newspaper article based on the story of The Stone Age Boy. They have worked hard to create engaging reports which include the key features of newspapers. During Science this week, Year 3 have been learning more about animals, particularly their skeletons. They have used their learning to sort animals based on their different types of skeletons. It has been a very busy week! Year 4 – have used what they learnt on the Y4 Iceland Day to start writing a travel brochure. In Maths, they have been multiplying by 1 and 0, dividing by 1 and itself and multiplying three numbers together. In History, they have been really interested in learning about Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses. They have created an amazing fact file and retold the Greek Myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. In Guided Reading, we have continued looking at their text 'Arthur and the Golden Rope' and have discussed what makes a hero and a villain. In PSHE, they explored what is special about themselves and each other. They said positive affirmations to themselves and shared what is special about each other. Year 5 – have explored mixed numbers and improper fractions even further. They have been busy adding fractions within 1 and greater than 1. In English, the children have started exploring Christmas stories and have written detailed character and setting description - they were remarkable! In Science, the children produced a leaflet to consolidate everything they have learnt about materials. The children explored the end of the era for Vikings to further deepen their understanding about the Vikings in Humanities. It was a fun learning week in Year 5! Year 6 – have begun planning a narrative based on a short video clip called 'Glue'. The children are looking forward to retelling the story of a boy addicted to computer games! In maths, Year 6 have worked hard solving problems involving multiplying fractions by integers. In humanities, Year 6 have started to explore Brazil as a country, this week they looked at its location, its capital city and the main regions. This Week In School…
Year 3 – have been busy building their times-table knowledge in Maths. This week, they have been focusing on the 5 times and 10 times tables, working on how to multiply and divide. They were able to transfer this knowledge to solve word problems. In English, Year 3 have been using their creativity skills to develop a brand new animal! They have put their fantastic ideas into non-chronological reports working hard to include lots of detail and fascinating facts. Finally, Year 3 had a brilliant end to the week with their WOW Pre-Historic Britain Day! The children were transported back to Pre-Historic Britain for the day using their recent work in History to complete a variety of activities including den building, Pre-Historic PE and animal fact files. A busy and brilliant week – well done year 3! Year 4 – have been working hard to continue their narrative poems they had paused writing to rescue Dog Man last week. They are very excited to share their poems with each other and some are looking forward to sharing them at the poetry party. In Maths, they have been solving multiplication problems using the 7 times tables. In History, they have learnt about ancient Greek warfare, they have looked at a soldier’s uniform and learnt about the origins of the marathon and were shocked that the Trojan War was won using a wooden horse. In Science, both classes have now finished their experiment into finding the best sound proofing material as part of their topic on sound. Year 5 – have worked hard all week to continue their learning on fractions. They have learnt how to order and compare fractions with different numerators and denominators, by converting them using their times table knowledge. In English, they have also completed our Dogman comics, where the children have really impressed us with their artistic talents. They have also introduced some new features on our Year 5 success criteria, including modal verbs and parenthesis, which they have understood brilliantly. In Humanities, they have consolidated their learning on the Vikings by producing some detailed timelines of the major events in this historical period. Year 6 – have completed their comic strips and solved the mystery of the disappearance of Dog Man. They produced some fantastic stories whilst ensuring to include as many features from the Year 6 writing success criteria as possible. In maths, Year 6 have compared and ordered fractions and also solved problems involving adding and subtracting fractions. In science, the children have planned and investigated how harmful micro-organisms grow; they will be observing and recording their results over the course of the next few weeks. This Week In School…
Year 3 – have been using their call from Dog Man to create their very own comic book. They have used the evidence from around the school to formulate a fantastic series of events that end in an interesting and well-thought-out Dog Man adventure. In Maths, they have used their knowledge of their 2 times-tables to explain halving and doubling. They then used that understanding to solve word problems. In DT, they have created some creative finger and hand puppets, which let them show off their sewing skills. Year 4 – have loved trying to solve the mystery of what has happened to Dog Man! They have really enjoyed drawing their own comic book strips where they have made themselves the hero of the story rescuing Dog Man. In Computing they have been phishing... they learnt about online scams and how their online activity can be traced and traced via their digital footprint. In History, they carried out research comparing Athens and Sparta. They were shocked to learn about the different ways boys and girls were treated. In Maths, they have become more familiar with their 3, 6 and 9 times tables and how they are related. Year 5 – have worked hard in understanding improper fractions and mixed numbers. They have been busy converting fractions from one form to another. In English, the children finished writing their newspaper articles about Salim's disappearance and worked hard publishing them - they were impressive! The children explored reversible and irreversible reactions by carrying out the Coke and Mentos experiment, which they enjoyed so much! In Humanities, the children learnt about King Alfred the Great to deepen their understanding of the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons in Britain. It was a busy but fun week in Year 5! Year 6 – have enjoyed writing about the mystery of the disappearance of Dog Man. They have planned and drafted their comic strips and are looking forward to creating a class book with all their stories. In Maths, they have begun looking at fractions and have solved problems involving equivalent fractions and fractions on a number line. In Science, they are exploring organisms and living things. Year 3 – have been learning about multiplication in Maths this week. They have been using arrays, repeated addition and bar models to solve multiplication problems. In English, they have been planning and writing instructions about how to make a potion. They have been very imaginative with their ideas and have written instruction about potions to make you disappear, turn into a shark and to be able to fly! In Humanities, they have continued to learn about Pre-Historic Britain and have created their own cave paintings. In French, they have been learning about seasons with a focus on learning how to describe each season. Year 4 – have had a busy week in English. They have finished their retellings of the Norse Myth where Thor challenges the giants and have published this piece of work. They have also started planning and writing a narrative poem about a journey that the main character (from their guided reading text 'Arthur and the Golden Rope') goes on. They have been working really hard to make their poems rhyme too as an added challenge! In Maths, they have completed their unit on area by comparing the different areas of shapes. They have also begun their multiplication unit by looking at multiples of 3 and 6. In DT, they have been looking at where different fruits and vegetables grow around the world. In History, they have started their Ancient Greek topic but looking at the timeline of when Ancient Greece was and seeing where it fits into the overall history of the world. Year 5 – have had a busy week at school. In Maths, they have started delving into the world of fractions, exploring unit fractions and non-unit fractions. They have also started reading a new book in Guided reading - The London Eye Mystery. In English, they have begun to write a newspaper article about Salim's disappearance (this is related to the events of their guided reading book) and have worked hard to include success criteria such as relative clauses. In Science, they have also conducted experiments to explore separating techniques of mixtures. It has been a busy and fun week in Year 5! Year 6 – have been continuing to write their recounts based on PGL or non-PGL week in English this week. Everyone has enjoyed reading about what they got up to during the week! In Maths, they have finished their topic on the four operations in preparation for starting fractions during next week. The children have continued learning about the elements of art during their Art lessons and have produced some great work, ending with a 'silly' landscape which shows the variety of skills they have been learning about. Year 3 – have been recapping addition and subtraction, including solving word problems in Maths, before they move onto multiplication next week. In English, they have been planning and writing a narrative based on a video clip called 'The marshmallow'. They have focused on writing an opening, a problem and a resolution. In Humanities, they have begun their History topic learning about Prehistoric Britain. They have been learning about placing events in chronological order and the use of historical sources to learn about the past. In RE, they have been reflecting on celebrations and why they are important part of different religions. Year 3 have settled back into school really well after the half term break and have been working incredibly hard. Well done! Year 4 – have had a busy first week back at school. They started their new half term by taking part in a Wow Day to excite them about their new theme for English this term. They took part in Iceland day and got to spend the whole day immersing themselves in all things Icelandic. They tested their maths skills budgeting for their trip, took part in a Viking work out session, learnt about different things you can do in Iceland, tried different Icelandic foods, and enjoyed a warm hot chocolate under the Northern Lights. During the rest of their week, they have started writing a Norse Myth in English, have started learning about area in Maths and begun their sound topic in Science. They have learnt about vibrations, took part in a sound survey around school and learnt about how the ear works. Year 5 – have had a very exciting first week of the term. In Maths, they explored square and cube numbers in addition to practicing multiplication of numbers by 10, 100 and 1,000. They have learnt how to use direct speech and relative clauses in their writing and have written a diary entry including these elements. Continuing to learn more about materials in Science, they have carried out an experiment to observe which materials are soluble and insoluble in water. Year 5 have had a memorable and exciting Viking day where they were all Vikings for the day, making a Longship and going on a treasure (plastic of course!) hunt as Vikings did! In Maths, they have been focussing on division and have solved problems using the written method for short division and long division. Year 3 – have had a very busy week. In English, they have been publishing their diaries of 'A day in The Tin Forest'. In Maths, they have been learning to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 and have used these skills to estimate answers to addition and subtraction questions. They have completed their art topic, exploring shape and form and then positive and negative space. In PE, they have been taking part in mini football matches and have demonstrated that they are great team players. We are incredibly proud of all that Year 3 have achieved this half term, well done! Year 4 – have been using their written method of subtraction to solve problems involving exchanging with one exchange and more than one exchange in Maths. In English, they have been working in groups to research plastic pollution in the oceans and how we can change and protect the future. They have taken this research and written two paragraphs for their non-chronological report. In Art, they have been creatively putting their sketchbooks together with all of the artwork they have created this term. In Humanities, they ended their topic by writing a fact file about rivers of Africa. Year 5 – have delved into the mathematical world of factors, multiples and prime numbers and have worked on solving mathematical problems using the knowledge they have acquired. They also completed their information leaflet based on China and have worked hard to produce colourful and attractive leaflets! As well as the information leaflets, they have also started writing a character description of a strange, fascinating animal – the Tardigrade! In Science, they observed what happens to wet and dry materials when they are burnt and wrote some insightful, scientific conclusions. It has been a week of scientific exploration, mathematical thinking and creative writing in Year 5! Year 6 – have been away on their residential PGL trip, taking part in lots of exciting outdoor activities and braving the weather! Those children who have remained in school have also had a great week, doing a range of activities in school. These have included: designing and painting their own pillowcase; creating a 'nature art bug' from nature items collected from the playground; decorating a stone; finding out about the decades from the 1950s to - and including - the 1990s; creating a decade mood board; construction afternoons using Lego; watching a movie; team and individual challenges; sporting activities; and a technology challenge making a fashion outfit from black sacks. Year 3 – have developed their knowledge of the aspects of story-telling by looking at character description. They took the protagonist of their class text 'The Tin Forest' and wrote fantastic descriptions that used similes, metaphors and expanded noun phrases. In Maths, they developed their understanding of addition using the column method. They started with 2-digit additions with no regrouping before moving onto addition that required regrouping. In Science, they have started to look at plants and what they need to survive. They have set up comparative investigations that look into the needs and functions of a plant. In Computing, they continued to practise their touch-typing skill. In PSHE, they explored the ideas of responsibility and consequences. Year 4 – have been planning and writing a setting description for a spooky or a magical forest! They have been using expanded noun phrases to create some amazing pieces of description. In Maths, they have been ordering and comparing numbers up to 10,000 and learnt all about Roman numerals. In Science they took part in a series of experiments observing processes that change the state of water. They looked at changing ice into water – melting and gas into liquid – condensation. In Humanities, they explored the mountain ranges of Africa and made posters about them. London have also been practising for their Coffee with your Class morning. Year 5 – have been a whirlwind of creativity and learning. Inspired by the works of Kandinsky, our young artists have delved into the world of abstract art, using shapes to craft their own unique masterpieces. In Maths, they've honed their rounding skills, deepening their knowledge in numerical operations. The narrative journey based on 'The Girl and the Fox' continues, with students now skilfully weaving in vivid setting descriptions and character portrayals, truly bringing their stories to life. To add a touch of the performing arts, they've taken on poems of their choice, carefully considering intonation, volume, and pace for impactful performances. In Humanities, the exploration of China's settlements has expanded young minds, fostering a deeper understanding of the world around them. It's been a week filled with artistic expression, academic growth, and cultural exploration for Year 5. Year 6 – have been researching global warming and climate change in English so that they can write a non-chronological report on the subject. This is linked to the class book they are reading in class; 'Floodlands' by Marcus Sedgwick. Year 6 have worked really hard in Maths. They have started to think about the 4 operations and practised solving problems using written methods of addition and subtraction. They have also revised, common factors and common multiples. In Humanities, Year 6 have explored the cause of volcanic eruptions by replicating the process with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar! This Week In School…
Year 3 – have been writing fantastic setting descriptions based on the book 'The Tin Forest'. In Maths, they have been ordering number using their knowledge of place value. They have learnt to use the 'greater than' and 'less than' symbols to compare numbers. In French, they have been increasing their vocabulary and are able to ask each other their names and how they are feeling. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow when speaking French to one another. They have started their Science topic learning about parts of the plants and beginning investigations about what seeds need to grow. Year 4 – have been working at recognising the different types of apostrophes in English. They have practised using them to contract words and to show possession. They have also been practising writing expanded noun phrases about a dog. In Maths, they have continued learning about place value, they have found 1, 10, 100 and a 1000 more or less of a number, solved number lines to 10, 000 problems and worked really hard at dividing two- and three-digit numbers by 10. They have continued to be amazing scientists this week by investigating evaporation - they now know how washing dries on a washing line! In PSHE, they explored the Right of the Child and what that means as well as learning all about plastic pollution in Guided Reading as part of their book this term 'One Plastic Bag'. Year 5 – have engaged themselves in a diverse range of activities. They have honed their artistic skills by mastering the art of shading, - creating stunning 3D shapes. In Maths, they’ve delved deeper into ordering and comparing numbers and learnt to use number lines. The budding writers among them have embarked on crafting a captivating narrative inspired by the thought-provoking video, ‘The Girl and the Fox’. Additionally, they have embarked on a journey into physical geography learning how meanders are formed. In Science, Year 5 have explored conductivity by designing thermal insulative lunch bags for a hands-on experiment. It has been exciting week for us in Year 5! Year 6 – have finished writing their fantasy stories about dragons in English and have published them. They have enjoyed reading these stories and have really impressed with some of the descriptive language they have used to describe characters and setting. In Maths, they are finishing the topic on place value, ready to move on to their new topic of the four operations. The children have created some great fact files about The Andes in Humanities and have now been finding out about the Amazon River and how oxbow lakes are formed. They are enjoying reading the class book, Floodlands, in Guided Reading and are gradually building a picture of the main characters involved. |
