This Week In School… Year 3 – have continued and completed their newspaper reports on the IVJS “intruder”. The children were amazing detectives and found lots of clues to help them discover who this mysterious “intruder” could be... You will have to ask Year 3 which famous person it could be! In Maths, they have been exploring measures. Year 4 – have been trying to persuade people to recycle their plastic in a leaflet for their English project. In Maths, they have been using communicative and distribution law to help us solve multiplication problems. In Humanities, they have used their research skills to find out about different African countries. In Science, they have been looking at how low and high pitch is created. In Computing, they have been discussing how we can protect our computers against malware. Year 5 – have been reading the story of Odysseus and The Cyclops, continuing the theme of ancient Greeks. In Art, they are beginning to design their own Greek pots whilst learning about the ancient Greeks in History. Phew! That’s a lot of information… I must admit, it’s all Greek to me. Year 6 – have been finalising and publishing their newspaper reports about Kester's escape (linked to the book, The Last Wild) in English. The children have also started their new Humanities topic about South America and their new RE topic, Rites of Passage. They have started Guided Reading groups where they will be looking at the techniques required in order to make them more fluent readers and to improve their comprehension skills. This Week In School… Year 3 – have discovered the mess left behind by a mysterious, fictional “visitor.” They have carried out their investigations using their Maths and English Skills to try and work out who it was. Hopefully, they will have concluded the investigation and worked out who it is next week! Year 4 – have read One Plastic Bag in English and have started planning a leaflet about recycling and plastic pollution. In Maths, they have been working out the perimeter of different shapes while in Computing, they have learnt the importance of not replying to SPAM emails in the first of their online safety lessons. Year 5 – have started to learn about Ancient Greece. In English, they have been writing a character description about Odysseus and in Humanities, they have been learning about where Greece is and learning some key facts. Year 6 – have been incredibly busy! At the start of the week, they were enthusiastically rehearsing their lines for their class assembly, which was presented to parents and the rest of the school on Thursday morning. Everyone spoke loudly, clearly and with fantastic confidence. Well done! During English, they have been writing a newspaper article reporting on a dramatic event which they have read about in the class text, ‘The Last Wild’. In Maths, they have continued to learn about fractions and have been converting them to their simplest form. On Friday morning, the whole school enjoyed the Primary Futures assembly, however, Year 6 were the lucky ones chosen to participate in a workshop with the volunteers! During this session, they found out more about the volunteer’s jobs including what skills and qualifications are needed to succeed in these careers. Today we welcomed volunteers from Primary Futures - their aim is to broaden horizons and raise aspirations by connecting schools to volunteers from the world of work to share their fascinating life stories and help make the connections between learning and future jobs. The programme is run in partnership with the National Association of Head Teachers, check out the website to learn more. https://educationandemployersprogrammes.force.com/s/
The day started with 5 volunteers partaking in a whole school assembly where we enjoyed the game 'What's My Line?' Children were invited to ask the volunteers questions about their job role that would only elicit a yes or no answer. The big reveal at the end was very exciting. After assembly, the visitors went into Year 6 to hold a 'Speed Networking' session where the classes were split into smaller groups and spent 6 minutes with each volunteer - hopefully inspiring them for the future... The 5 volunteers were fantastic and the children really enjoyed the day and got a great deal out of it. Congratulations to our new Year 6 Junior Road Safety Officers who will be supporting Mr Clifford and Mrs Orr with the Travel Tracker Scheme at IVJS and helping us all to stay safe on the roads. Keep an ear out for details about Road Safety Week later in November!
