We would like to thank all of the Families who attended our first Maths Games night on Friday 23rd November 2018 - it was a huge success! During the evening, there were a selection of traditional and maths based games which were enjoyed by the adults and children alike. Refreshments of tea, coffee and hot chocolate were laid on to ensure that it felt just like a cosy family time! All of the food was made here, buy our lovely pupils from the vegetables we have grown as part of our healthy eating initiative.
This Week In School… Year 3 – have been very busy today cooking! There are some amazing smells coming from the lower school kitchen… They have also been writing diary entries as Hogarth (one of the characters from The Iron Man) in English and been continuing to practise the formal method of division in Maths, now that is a busy week! Year 4 – have been working on a script in order to produce a News programme based around their text this term, ‘Varjak Paw’. In Maths, they have been working on short division and will be using their scaling skills to help them with the correct amount of ingredients for when they bake their healthy carrot muffins for the Family Maths Games Night. Year 5 – have explored soluble and insoluble materials by doing an experiment to see how they could separate various materials from water. They also jumped headfirst into multiplication and continued to take their journey through Ancient Greece! They took a little trip to Italy, as they used their garden tomatoes to make mini pizzas. Year 6 – have been learning about the features of and writing play scripts. In Maths, they have continued learning about fractions and in Science, the children have been looking at micro-organisms. They also enjoyed baking broccoli and cauliflower bites as part of our Healthy Eating project this year. Last night, Mr Hawkes and our Senior Leadership Team were invited to a Sports Awards Evening as IVJS were nominated for The Sports Primary School of the Year 2018!
There were 120 nominations from Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes and we were ranked in the top 3! Although we didn’t win first place, being nominated for such a prestigious accolade is an incredible achievement so we would like to thank Mr Hawkes for all his hard work throughout the school year, every year making us not only one of the best schools in terms of sports, but also one of the most fun to be in! This week, all IVJS students took part in Interhouse Benchball! After a full on day in which each class participated for 30 minutes, contributing to an overall total. In the end, it was a draw between Shepperton and Ealing for third place and Elstree and Pinewood for first place! What a tight contest! Year 6 will be competing again today to see if we can get an overall winner! Well done to all who participated!
We would like to invite you to the Lower School Christmas production! We have two performances;
We are offering three tickets to each performance for the Year 4s and one ticket to each performance to the Year 3s initially but more may be available later, details of extra tickets will be sent out on Monday 3rd December via text message. This is due to the capacity of our hall, this policy will be the same next year when our Year 3s are in Year 4. Tickets cost £2 each. All children attending Iver Village Junior School will have the opportunity to view the production during the school day. On the Wednesday (evening performance), lower school children will need to return to school by 6:00pm so they have time to get changed into their costumes (or 5.30pm if they need to have their face painted). Before the performance, tea, coffee and mince pies will be available to buy. There will also be a small raffle. Please note, face painting for any characters such as animals will be done in school. If your child has any problems with face paint, please let the school know as soon as possible. At the end of the both performances, all children will need to be collected from their classrooms by an adult. We do hope that you will be able to join us for one of the performances. Yours sincerely, The Lower School Team The deadline for this year's Snowman Picture Competition is tomorrow! Don't forget to get your entry in. Thank you to everyone who have sent their pictures in already this week, we have had some fantastic works of art already!
This week, as part of Switch Off Month, the Eco-Council presented an assembly to encourage us to save energy and money!
Apart from reminding us to save energy by switching off lights, the focus was on Goodbye Standby, making sure we all remember that leaving TVs and games consoles on standby uses energy and is a waste of money, it all adds up! Join us, save, switch off and say goodbye to standby! This Week In School… Year 3 – have had a very excited week coming up with descriptions of the Iron Man and coming up with poems based on their descriptions. In Maths, they have started learning the formal method for division. Year 4 – have been creating a newspaper report based around the ‘vanishings’ in Varjak Paw. In Maths, they have been working on short multiplication and learning about scaling, perfect for recipes! They have also started learning about volcanoes in Humanities and what sound actually is in Science! Year 5 – have been learning about combustion by watching how items burn. They have also been planning their narrative on Odysseus and the Cyclops. Morpurgo have been getting stuck into their class assembly based on Michael Morpurgo, the Fresh Prince of St Albans… Year 6 – have started learning all about fractions in Maths and have been publishing their newspaper reports in English - we are looking forward to reading the final versions. At the beginning of the week, they had an internet safety session with a representative from CEOP, part of the National Crime Agency, which they found very interesting and informative. Today is Children in Need Day AND Friendship Friday. To celebrate, we have come to school wearing yellow!
Friendship Friday is part of Anti Bullying Week with this year’s theme of ‘Choose Respect’. The children have all been showing respect and thinking about what makes everyone special individually. We would like to thank everyone who donated today, we raised a grand total of £180.86 to donate to Children in Need. Now that’s teamwork This week, we marked Parliament Day by celebrating Democracy and learning about the British Parliament.
They learned that the word democracy comes from Democracy means ’rule by the people’. It comes from the Greek words Dêmos, which means people, and Krátos, which means rule or strength. As always, the children were split into groups across the years and talked about the rights all citizens have and how these link to the articles in the UN rights of the child. They discussed the quiestion 'At what age should people be allowed to vote?' and the vocabulary they had used during the lesson. Children produced drawings of their own hands with one of the words on it to form a large poster of hands up to represent voting. Some children branched off to create their own political parties and stood in election next to other parties like the ‘Teachers Party’. At the end of the session some of the children made a speech as to why they should be Prime Minister. |
