We have set up a page for parents of children who are attending PGL 2018. It will be on this page that the teachers will post updates of the children while they are away. This year, instead of a Facebook page, we have set up a separate, password protected webpage for parents to view. The link to the page along with the password will be sent to parents who request it via separate text messages for security reasons. Please complete the form (part of the letter) and return to school as soon as possible so that we can begin sending out links to the PGL Updates page. This Week In School… Year 3 – have finished their letters to the local MP explaining how we all can improve the environment in Iver. In Maths, they have learnt the formal method of subtraction. They also really enjoyed making their leek and potato soup! Year 4 – have been writing to the local MP in English trying to convince him to help us improve recycling in Iver. In Maths, they have been using the expanded column method to add 3 and 4 digit numbers. They have also made some amazing chicken noodle soup (with handmade pasta noodles!) Year 5 – have been busy practising our narrative writing skills in English and making real life estimations in Maths. In Science, they have been exploring materials, they carried out an investigation into the best thermal conductors and insulators. The results have given them some great tips on how to keep warm this winter! To add to this busy week, they have also started to create their class letters ready to send off to their pen pals, they are so excited for their response! Year 6 – have been enjoying reading their Power of Reading book, The Last Wild, by Piers Today and have started to write their own escape stories, linked to the story plot. They were very lucky to have representatives from Heathrow Airport come in on Wednesday morning to deliver a computing activity in the form of a coding challenge. The children also enjoyed making bread for the Big Soup Share on Wednesday; all of which seemed to go down very well with those who were lucky enough to attend the event on Wednesday evening! What a success! Wednesday held our first Big Soup Share night and even we were surprised by just how eager you all were to try all the varieties of soup the different year groups made. With a choice of Leek and Potato, Chicken or Vegetable Noodle and Tomato Soup, all mopped up with freshly made crusty bread, hand made by our year 6s, our school hall was packed with families, excited to try the incredible smelling soups!
The children did fantastically well, not only learning about food, where it comes from and how to eat healthy, but also making a real effort to try foods they normally wouldn’t eat! That sounds like success to me! Thank you to everyone who came along and supported our school and the children including all the staff and a load of the mums of the members of staff who came in to help! I am writing to you to invite you to stand for election as a parent governor, or nominate another parent to do so. We currently have two vacancies for parent governors. The governing body, with the headteacher, has overall responsibility for the running of the school. Governing bodies have three core strategic functions:
No special qualifications are needed and the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the school and be prepared to play an active part in the governing body’s work. Training is available for all governors and this governing body has an expectation that those new to being a governor, attend free induction training. The enclosed sheet summarises the circumstances under which someone cannot serve as a governor. In addition, parents/carers who have paid employment in the school for 500 or more hours per academic year or who are elected members of the Local Authority, are not eligible to stand in these elections. Nominations must be from parents or carers with children at the school on the day that nominations close. If you would like to stand for election, please complete the enclosed nomination form and return it to the school no later than Tuesday 30th October. You may also include a short personal statement to support your nomination, which should be no longer than 250 words. Self-nominations will be accepted but if you are nominating another parent, please seek their prior consent. If there are more nominations than vacancies, the election will be by secret ballot. If that is necessary, voting papers will be sent to all parents together with details of the ballot procedure. Yours sincerely, Miss J Digweed Headteacher, Year 6 took part in a fantastic coding challenge run by Heathrow. They learnt a little bit about Heathrow Airport and about all the different types of cargo that goes through the airport. Following on from this, they had an opportunity to use coding on laptops to move imaginary cargo trains from one part of the airport to another, telling the trains which way to turn and how far to travel. Some of them even managed to get their trains to talk to each other! It was a great morning and we are very grateful to Heathrow for providing this exciting technology event.
Don't forget to book Mad Science for Next half term! Places are limited so book soon to avoid disappointment.
This club is run by the Mad Science Organisation who will be coming in to our school each week to run the club on our behalf so sign up at www.madscience.org/bbo for your place! Dear Parents/Guardians,
We would like to remind parents of the school procedure for children who have unexplained absences from school. There have been public cases in the past where schools have not chased up the reasons as to why children are off of school. It has then transpired that there have been tragic circumstances around these absences, e.g. illness of a parent and a child unable to seek help. We will do everything we can to prevent such situations occurring as I am sure you would agree that your child’s safety is paramount to us all. If your child is not going to be in school, please call the office or email the school to report their absence. Please do this before 9am on the first day of the absence and each day afterwards. If we have not heard from you by 9.15am then we will start to call all the contact numbers that you have provided in order to gain an explanation for the absence. If we still have not been able to ascertain where your child is then we will make a home visit. However, if we still haven’t been able to get a response then we will report it to the police as your child will then be classed a ‘missing child’. This procedure is to ensure that we know where your child is and that you are all safe. This is the recommended procedure in Bucks. Please let us know in good time why your child is absent from school. If you would like to talk to us about this, please make an appointment to see Mrs Chapman-Allen. Yours sincerely, Miss Digweed, Headteacher |
