As part of their Science topic, Evolution and Inheritance, Year 6 received a visit from Zoo Lab on Friday morning. The children had the chance to meet and in some cases, hold or touch, a variety of creatures who have evolved over the generations to suit their surroundings: a giant snail, a giant cockroach, a tarantula, a millipede and a snake. It was a very informative and enjoyable session and the children were able to learn about evolution as well as about the individual creatures. They asked some very well thought out questions and have been able to build upon their knowledge of the topic so far. Today Year 6 took part in the Heathrow Cargo Challenge which is linked to the curriculum and has been established to inspire the next generation to consider a career at the airport. This Challenge is an enjoyable way for 10 and 11-year olds to explore their enterprise skills, develop social and personal skills and encourage team working and communication skills. It also provides an enjoyable way for Year 6 pupils to explore roles at the airport developing the core Heathrow World of Work skills. During the 2-hour challenge, pupils work in teams to help Heathrow deliver aid to a disaster zone. Helped by several Heathrow colleagues, pupils choose what cargo to send, how to get the cargo to the airport sustainably, and design and write coding programs to get the cargo to the planes efficiently. The challenge brings the curriculum to life and encourages pupils to aim high by thinking creatively, reasoning systematically, and working collaboratively. This Week In School… Year 3 – have settled well and are working hard on writing a diary entry using their text based story, The Tin Forest. In Maths, they have been working on their number bonds and adding and subtracting in 10s and 100s. In Science, they’re looking at plants and will be growing their own ones in the week! Year 4 – have started the new term positively and have been working really hard from day one. In English, they have started reading the first book of the year, Varjak Paw. They’ve started writing an informal letter from Varjak to his grandfather, Elder Paw. In Maths, they have been refreshing their knowledge of place value and have been working with four digit numbers. In Science, they have been learning all about the digestive system and what each part does. They’ve even carried out an experiment visualising the digestive process and ended up making “poo”! Year 5 – have been looking at Place Value and can now read really large numbers accurately. They have started looking at The Journey in Literacy and will be writing a poem over the next couple of weeks based on it. They have been enjoying reading and listening to some amusing poems too! They have also started learning about China! Ask Year 5 what they have learnt this week! Year 6 – have started their year with a great attitude to learning and have already been working hard. In English, they have been writing story openers for different genres and in Science, the children have started their topic on Evolution and Inheritance. They have also started their new Humanities topic - Brazil. Dear Parents/Guardians, As part of our Science learning this term, ZooLab will be visiting Year 6 on Friday 20th September. The children will be learning about how living things on Earth have changed over time. They will be introduced to the idea that characteristics are passed from parents to their offspring and they will begin to understand that variation in offspring over time can make animals more or less able to survive in particular environments. This visit will involve the showing and handling of live animals and all of the children will get the opportunity to handle some of the animals themselves. Although we will encourage all of the children to join in with the activities it is important to note that no child will be forced to handle any animal that they don’t want to. ZooLab take health and safety very seriously and you can rest assured that all of the animals handled by your children are totally safe and unable to cause any harm. We will also have a strict hand washing policy that we will enforce at the end of the session. We’re sure that your child will enjoy this experience and am sure that it will bring this term’s Science topic to life. We are looking for voluntary contributions of £7 to cover the costs of the event. You will be able to pay your contribution via the School Money system or you can send the money in an envelope to the school reception.
