This Week In School… Year 3 – have worked hard learning about angles and turns. In English, they have been busy writing a non-chronological report about Tobago using their new book for this term - Gregory Cool. Year 4 – have begun reading their new text 'Mouse Bird Snake Wolf' by David Almond and have started writing a balanced argument in English. In Maths, they have revised their understanding of 'Time' including calendar facts and converting from analogue to digital. Year 5 – have been working hard learning about measurements and converting them too! In English, they have started planning their poem based on their new half term book called 'The Princess' Blankets'. We have also been learning about mountains and mountain ranges in Humanities. Year 6 – have been writing some fantastic fantasy stories about a dragon slayer - their writing has really improved over the year and we are looking forward to reading the final stories. The children have also started rehearsing their end of year production and provided a great afternoon tea for local senior citizens as part of their Community Card scheme. So many of the guests commented on how polite and friendly the children were and we are very proud of them all! Dear Parents/Guardians of Years 5 & 6,
Nowadays there is a vast amount of, sometimes confusing, information about relationships and sex on the internet, on TV, in magazines, etc. which young people may have access to, and this can sometimes make an already confusing time seem even more complicated! Therefore, as part of the school’s Personal, Social and Health Education programme your child will soon receive lessons on relationships, sexual health and puberty. The purpose of Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) is to provide knowledge and understanding of how the human body changes during puberty and the processes of human reproduction, within the context of relationships based on love and respect. It should develop understanding and attitudes which will help pupils to form relationships in a responsible and healthy manner and to appreciate the value of stable family life, including the responsibilities of parenthood and marriage. If young people can start their transition into adulthood with good information and the confidence and knowledge to understand what is happening to them, they will hopefully grow into confident and healthy adults able to make positive choices. This can start with learning the basics about growing up and the sessions in school may reinforce what you are already doing at home. The key aims of SRE are to: 1. Provide accurate and relevant information about the physical and emotional changes that children and young people will experience through their formative years and into adulthood. 2. Establish an awareness of the importance of stable family life and relationships, including the responsibilities of parenthood and marriage. 3. Foster self-awareness and self-esteem. 4. Develop a sense of responsibility and respect for themselves and others. The SRE programme includes watching a video from BBC Active and input from the class teacher. All teaching materials are appropriate to the age and emotional maturity of the pupils concerned and the teachers will aim to present the programme in an objective, balanced and sensitive manner. The programme will cover:
You are welcome to view the materials and discuss the format of the lessons that will be used in a meeting for parents on Monday 25th June at 6 pm. Parents can withdraw their children from all or part of sex and relationship education that does not form part of the statutory National Curriculum. If you wish to withdraw your child from all or part of the schools sex and relationship education programme would you please write to your child’s class teacher before the programme starts. Class teachers in Year 6 will begin the programme during the week beginning 25th June however Year 5 will begin to learn about animal reproduction (including humans) as part of their national curriculum science topic starting in Summer Half Term 2. Please RSVP here to let us know if you will be attending the meeting on Monday 25th June. Yours sincerely, Mr Clifford / Mrs Chapman-Allen / Miss Bjorck / Mrs Bowden Members of our Gardening Club are organising a plant sale for Tuesday 12th June at 3.15pm on the front lawn of the school. Our aim is to raise funds for our school. We will be selling plants, display baskets and hanging baskets that the children will have planted up the previous week. If you would like to pre-order a hanging basket or display created by your child, please let us know before the sale and we will be able to put the items aside. We hope that you will agree to allow your child to help with the sale during next week’s Gardening Club and that you will come along and admire their creative planting. After the sale, Gardening Club will run as normal until 4.15pm as normal. If you do not want your child taking part in the sale, please contact the school, or Mrs Orr directly, to let us know. Thank you for your support, Mrs Orr As you know, this year at IVJS we are having at least one exciting monthly reading event. On Friday 15th June 6pm - 7pm we are having a Harry Potter Themed Evening! Our aim is to develop a passion for reading and a buzz around books and what better way to do it than celebrate the incredible Harry Potter series. |
