Our Digital Ambassadors have been around each class this week educating our school on the importance of staying safe online and showing the children how to do this. Well done guys!
What a fantastic day! Yesterday, the whole school spent the day learning about each year group's chosen country. Year 3s learnt about Italy, finding out about the ancient Romans, making lovely mosaic flowers and birds, writing about the mosaics and ending the day making pizzas! Our Year 4s decided on Australia as their country to learn about and found out where in the world Australia is, learnt about the animals and culture, learnt some Australian school songs and made kangaroo burgers! As Miss Naulls is Canadian, the obvious choice for Year 5s country was Canada. They learnt 101 facts about Canada and made Poutine, you can't go far wrong with chips, gravy and cheese! Year 6 learnt about India, they researched the traditions and customs, designed their own Mehndi patterns, made samosas and recapped everything they learnt in a leaflet. During the evening, all of the food that was made during the day was ready for all the parents to try. We had a great turnout so thank you to everyone who came and tried all of the great food! This year, we will be taking part in the National Schools Partnership's Big Battery Hunt! The focus will be on recycling, each child will be given their own box to fill with any empty, used batteries they may have lying around the house instead of putting them in the bin. Each year, over 20,000 tonnes of batteries end up in landfill sites across the UK. That's as heavy as about 4,000 elephants! Please help support our pupils by helping them collect batteries for their mini boxes (which can be emptied into the big battery container in our library), not only can they help do our bit for the planet but we may win some prizes for our efforts too! During assembly yesterday, we spoke about Safer Internet Day, focusing on this year's tag line - Our internet, our choice - Understanding consent in a digital world. We spoke about what the words 'consent' and 'permission' mean when you are online. The children understood that permission was always needed and that it was okay to say no.
All children will be having an internet safety lesson during their PSHE sessions this week and the e-safety ambassadors will go to each class asking every child to complete their own 'Permission Mission'. Please see the document for the full minutes for the Iver Village Schools Working Party's meeting from the 23rd January 2019. The focus for this British Values Day was the UNICEF OutRight Campaign - which is focusing on children's health. The children were asked to mix classes so that they could share learning experiences with the rest of the school.
Pupils with the Year 3 teachers discussed the right children have to clean air. They came up with acrostic poems, designed leaflets, and wrote letters to parliament about the affects air pollution on children's health. Pupils with the Year 4 teachers focused on the theme of air pollution in a variety of ways, from creating a poster about the affects it has on our health, to writing to the Minister of Environment- Michael Gove, some of them even made a comic strip featuring Captain Air Pollution! Pupils with the Year 5 teachers created an advert on air pollution, persuading the public to think about the choices they make on their journeys to school, work and when running local errands. They also created an air pollution poster to support their ideas. Pupils with the Year 6 teachers looked at the story of Paddington and discussed the way in which he was taken into a home and cared for to ensure that he was healthy. On Thursday, we were treated to the Dahl Class Assembly. We were so impressed with how well they had learnt their lines - considering so many children had been unwell during the week. They acted, sung and read from their own amazing poems. We particularly enjoyed the poem about Mr Clifford!
*Please note, this letter has been set to Year 6 pupils in paper form on 4th February 2019* In order to enhance their learning this term, we have arranged for Rosen and Rowling classes to take part in some activities outside of the classroom. The first of these was at the beginning of this term when the children took part in an enjoyable circus workshop where they were able to learn circus skills. The other activity is a visit to Denham Country Park on Thursday, 14th March. The visit will include a walk around the park and some supervised science activities in the river. The coach will depart school at 9.20am and will return by 3.15pm. Further details will be given nearer the time. We are asking for a voluntary contribution of £18.00 to cover the cost of these activities and the coach to and from Denham Country Park. This contribution will be on our School Money system for payment. Unfortunately, the trip will not be able to go ahead without enough contributions. Children will be river dipping so it is really essential that they have wellington boots that come up to the knee for this trip. If you do not have these, they are available to purchase at very reasonable prices, approx. £5 - £10, from a variety of retailers. Some additional adult support may be required on this trip and we would be grateful if you could also indicate on the return slip if you would be willing to help supervise a small group of children on the day. If your help is required, we will let you know as soon as possible. On Tuesday, pupils from all year groups competed in their houses for a chance to crown their house as the first Volleyball champions! The competition was close throughout and relied on Year 3 to settle it in the final game! In the end Ealing beat Pinewood by one point to clinch the title with Shepperton and Elstree third and fourth but only two points behind Pinewood in second! Well done to all pupils who showed terrific sportsmanship! What a fun day! Friday 1st February 6:20am - we are sorry to announce that the school will be closed today due to adverse weather conditions. We will be open again on Monday 4th February.
