Ruby, one of our lovely Year 6s, has completed the Buckinghamshire Libraries 'Treasure Trail' reading scheme, which is quite an achievement. She has visited the library over 120 times to complete this challenge and has borrowed over 350+ books since joining Iver Heath library. I think you'll all agree this is a fantastic accomplishment. Well done Ruby! We are delighted to inform you that we have recently signed up to the online payment system SchoolMoney. This means that you will now have the facility to make payments for school expenses, such as trips, online with your debit or credit card from 19th February 2018. This new payment system will benefit both us as a school and you as a parent. Not only will you be able to pay for items from the comfort of your own home but you will also be able to access your account at any time to see if there is anything you need to pay for. SchoolMoney will enable us to experience a more streamlined, cost-effective and efficient payment system in a secure and safe environment. This month, the article from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is Article 1. This article explains that every single child across the United Nations are entitled to the 54 articles. At the Iver Village Junior School we believe these rights must be put in place by all governments around the world. Children under the age of 18 should have a protected and safe beginning and as they grow they should be provided with opportunities to thrive educationally and socially. We want all children around the world to grow up to be honest, responsible, respectful, caring and confident global citizens. At The Iver Village Junior School we are learning more about the struggles and injustice of other children under 18 around the world. These issues make us sad and we realise just how lucky we are to live in a peaceful country. This month’s Article is… Article 1 Everyone under the age of 18 has all the rights in the convention. Talk Time…. · What does every new born baby need to survive? · Do you think every new born child receives these things? · Why do you think it is important teenagers still have these rights up until they are 18? It's a Police Community Support Officer! Lower school met our local PCSOs and police officer who explained to the children their role in keeping them safe. They demonstrated what resources are available to them and it gave children the opportunity to ask questions and even try on their uniforms! As you have seen in the news, Change for Life are always campaigning for healthier lifestyle. At the moment, they are focusing on snacks, keep reading or have a look at their website for some useful tips and info. It has loads of information, games, tips and advice for parents and children alike. You can even apply for money off vouchers! Choosing Healthier Snacks When it comes to snack time, we know it can be hard if your kids are pestering you or helping themselves to whatever they like from the cupboards. Snacks can all add up – and normally there’s more sugar in them than you think! We should all try to make smarter choices when buying packaged snacks by remembering this top tip: look for 100 calorie snacks, and 2 a day max! 100 Calorie Snacks; Malt loaf, lower fat lower sugar fromage frais, fresh or tinned fruit salad, chopped vegetables and lower fat hummus, plain rice cakes or crackers with lower fat cheese, sugar free jelly, one crumpet, one scotch pancake! Although these snacks may contain 100 calories or less, products vary from shop to shop so remember to check the label. How to check for 100 calories: Many products have traffic light labels on the front of the pack. The calories are included on the left hand side of the label. Try to choose snacks with more greens and ambers on the label and cut down on snacks that show any reds. Not all packaged foods have traffic light labels but you can find out what you need to know about your snacks with the free food scanner app which is available at the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. DIY Snacks You can also save money by preparing healthy snacks yourself. Fresh, tinned or frozen fruit and vegetables are always a great choice for a snack! As you are aware, Rosen and Rowling classes will be visiting Denham Country Park on Wednesday, 21st February. Please find below some additional important pieces of information.
For each book our Reading Gladiators have read, they enter a mini-challenge. Last month our Year 4 Reading Gladiators won their competition and now incredibly, our Year 6 Gladiators have won too! They have been reading A Story Like The Wind by Gill Lewis and have said that they found this book deeply moving and thought provoking. They all felt that the story touched their hearts and encouraged them to think about the plight of others. Their challenge was to retell the story in a radio adaptation. Well done everyone!
Next term, Year 3 will be learning about the Victorian Era, focussing on what life was like at the time, particularly for children. In order to support your child’s learning we have organised a trip to the Reading Museum. The day will include a visit around the museum and an authentic Victorian lesson in the school house. We are really excited for the children to have the opportunity to understand more about the era they will be studying! Please note, this letter has been sent out today as a paper copy. This afternoon we were lucky enough to have a special visitor come and speak to parents about Internet Safety and what it means for their child. It was an interactive session which all parents found to be really informative. Thank you to Graham who delivered the meeting this afternoon.
Today is Safer Internet Day 2018 and it is being celebrated globally today on Tuesday 6th February 2018 with the slogan “Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you”.
The children attended a whole school assembly discussing the importance of well-being and healthy relationships online. The children will then follow this up in during their PSHE lessons this week. |
