British Values
Intent:
At IVJS we have 6 core values (respect, consideration, perseverance, honesty, commitment and positivity) which underpin everything that we do within the school. We believe that these values, alongside the British Values are essential in supporting our pupils to develop into well rounded individuals who are ready for the next stage in their education.
In 2014, The Department for Education published guidance for schools in promoting the fundamental British Values to ensure young people leave education prepared for life in modern Britain. (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/promoting-fundamental-british-values-through-smsc)
The Department for Education have rightly reinforced the need to “create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different beliefs.” Therefore, the British Values are an essential part of our school life and are woven into every aspect of our school curriculum and day to day school life. We aim to ensure that we value and celebrate the diversity found within our school community as well as being part of Britain. We aim to support our pupils in developing as global citizens and offer them opportunities to understand the world around them in a safe place where they can be inquisitive. We aim to ensure that our pupils are provided with opportunities to learn about others and their beliefs. We aim to ensure that pupils are able to articulate their own feelings and beliefs, listen carefully and thoughtfully to others and their opinions and have the confidence to respectfully challenge anything that undermines the values they hold, particularly in relation to current affairs.
We know that all the families and individuals within our school community will hold different beliefs and values. We believe that it is important to provide our pupils with a broad range of opportunities to understand and experience the diversity within our community and the ability to be united in our school values.
At IVJS we also ensure that we challenge pupils, parents or staff expressing opinions considered ‘extremist’ or that are undermining to fundamental British Values or Protected Characteristics. Staff have a comprehensive knowledge of the Prevent duty (which was published in 2011 and updated in 2015) and receive regular training. Our Prevent Duty Policy can be found below.

Implementation:
We believe it is essential to provide opportunity to experience the British Values which we do so through careful and meaningful links throughout our curriculum. We also are aware of the need to build on our pupils’ understanding of the British Values. Our progression of understanding and skills in relation to the British Values, our curriculum links to the British Values and how British Values are promoted in wider school life and through extra-curricular activities are identified in the documents below.
We know how important it is for staff to be confident in teaching the British Values both explicitly and within our school curriculum. Therefore, staff training and professional development is essential to the effective implementation of our curriculum. All staff have completed training related to the British Values from the National College and use this learning to underpin their teaching.
We help children to remember the British Values through the thumb and finger model. This helps to ensure that all our pupils can name the British Values.
Thumb – Democracy – up or down to give opinion.
Index finger – Rule of Law - pointing
Middle finger – Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs – tallest finger pointing to God.
Ring Finger – Mutual respect – wedding ring – respect for other people
Little finger – Individual Liberty – sticks out on its own
